How To Start A Lifestyle Blog (In 8 Easy Steps)
Curious how to start a lifestyle blog? Well you’ve come to the right place! Believe it or not starting up your very own lifestyle blog isn’t as difficult as you may think. It’s a wonderful way to express yourself, have fun and even make amazing connections. I’m going to break down step by step how to do it the right way.
How To Start A Lifestyle Blog-
A Simple Step By Step Guide For Beginners
1) Choose Your Topic
The beauty of starting up a lifestyle blog is that your topics can be whatever you want to personally explore.
When I was first starting out I made of list of topics that I love writing about. I then slowly narrowed this list down to 4 main topics I wanted to stick by (Health & Wellness, Travel, Lifestyle (day to day topics on life), and general tips and tricks (a DIY section))
I highly recommend sticking to 3-5 main topics when first starting out. Any more than that and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed trying to write a million blog posts to fill in all of these sections.
Make a list and start brainstorming your favorite writing topics!
2) WordPress.com or WordPress.org?
Before I jump into WordPress world – let me say this:
I know lovely sites like squarespace and even wix may look enticing and incredibly easy to build a blog on- BUT I highly recommend you stick with wordpress for your future blog baby.
Overall it’s just a way better platform and if you are interested in pursuing SEO tactics down the road- WordPress is google’s BFF.
Now wordpress.com or wordpress.org?
If you are just starting out and anything tech related makes you want to run for the hills – try going with wordpress.com first. It’s incredibly easy to make an account, build your blog, and it’s completely free.
If you are looking to have a little more control over your site and are ready to take some simple tech task on (also you have a few bucks to spend!) then go with wordpress.org.
3) Find A Domain Name
The exciting part!
What do you want your domain name to be?
What’s a catchy brand name or fun phrase that describes your new space?
This was another point in my creation process that I sat down and brainstormed A LOT before finally deciding on Nightowl In Flux.
Once you have a good idea of what you’d like your URL to be, it’s time to see if it’s available.
Head over to Bluehost to see if your domain name is available by entering it in the box that looks like this:
Once you find a domain name that is available you’re going to need hosting.
You can think of hosting your domain like renting a space on the web to display your blog.
Over at Bluehost they have 3 plans for hosting: Basic, Plus, & Prime.
I highly reccomend going with the basic plan when first starting out. It’s only $2.95 per month right now which is an amazing deal for all of the benefits that come with their service.
When first starting out I did a lot of research on the best hosting services out there and you can’t beat the benefits and pricing over at Bluehost.
5) Installing WordPress
Don’t worry – I promise it’s way easier than it sounds!
Once you’ve completed registration with Bluehost, you now need to go ahead and install wordpress.
First login to Bluehost and find the Website Builders section. Click on the WordPress logo.
On the next page click the “Install” button in the “Do it yourself FREE” box.
Then click the “Check Domain” button.
Now you’re going to check the terms and conditions box and then click the “Install Now” button.
You’ll then see a message that says “Your install is complete!”
When you see this message appear you’ll want to click on the “View Credentials” button.
Make sure to write down your Admin URL, Username, and Password that appears on this page. You can change these to something more memorable later, but you’ll need them to log into your WP account for the first time.
Logging in for the first time:
Type your Admin URL into your web browser. You’ll see a login screen like the one below. Enter your Username and Password you copied down from the previous step.
Congrats! You’re officially all set up to start your very own lifestyle blog!
6) JAZZ IT UP!
Now the super fun part! Picking a theme for your new site! There are plenty of amazing themes to choose from. When it comes to choosing a theme for your brand new site – go with one of the many amazing free options (don’t think you need a super expensive theme for your website to look amazing).
I’ve been addicted to a theme called Kale by Lyra Themes. It’s free and I love the minimal aesthetics that come with it.
After you install your new theme, make sure to delete out all preexisting filler posts in the theme before launching your new site.
7) Write Your First Post
When you’re ready to write your first post locate the tab on the left in wordpress that says “posts” – select the second option that says “add new”.
Ta-Da! You’re ready to get going.
Get ready to write about your passions! And also don’t forget to include lots of amazing pictures in your post!
8) Final Tips For Long Term Blogging Success
- Write About What You Love: Don’t hold back. Make sure to always write about your passions. If you don’t enjoy what you’re writing about blogging will just start to feel like a chore and that’s just no good!
- Pictures Pictures Pictures!!: Always include boat loads of pictures in your posts. It’s a wonderful way to give your posts a great aesthetic boost.
- Social Sharing: Make sure to always share every new blog post on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. Friends and family are a great tester audience when you are first starting out.
- Be Consistent: You don’t have to write crazy long blog posts everyday (unless you have lots of killer ideas that you need to belt out!) It’s important to be consistent though. Dedicate time to write a blog post every Sunday when you have some free time or whenever you have time come back to it, and share some magic.
Good Luck Lovelies!
